The United States and North Korea have had complicated diplomatic relationships over the years. The relations began during the Korean War but have recently been defined by the efforts of North Korea to develop nuclear weapons and long range missiles. North Korea has also been issuing repeated threats of missile strikes into the United States. In 2014, the relations of the two countries were tested during the Sony hacking scandal. This paper analyzes how the relations between the two countries were in the past year with a specific focus on the hacking crisis.
In June 2014, Sony Entertainment was planning to release a satirical movie about the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un. The movie, The Interview, starred Seth Rogen and James Franco as American journalists that intended to travel to North Korea and assassinate the leader. On June 25, officials of the North Korean government issued a condemnation of the movie saying that the portrayal of the country and its leader was tantamount to a terrorist act. The officials further warned that if the movie was released, it would respond decisively against the company and the United States.
